Coping with Benign Anxieties


My problem is if I don’t have anything to worry about I’ll think things up. I’ve been this way for as long as I can remember. The scenarios rarely become reality, but that doesn’t stop my overactive mind. All this mindful chatter causes undue anxiety, whether perceived or real, and since most of my internal chatter is harmless I refer to them as my benign anxieties. They may not be malignant, but they can get overwhelming, like my own mind is trying to bully me. For me coping with benign anxieties has become a daily ritual, and it can zap my mental, emotional and physical states of feeling normal.

Physicians have tried to help quell these anxieties through medication. Maybe that works for some people but not me. Instead of helping most often they led to insomnia, disorganized thoughts or feelings of uselessness. Ridiculous!

So I looked beyond traditional western medicine and found brainwave frequency training. This is not biofeedback or eeg neurofeedback. It is the opposite: biofeed-in. No consciously trying to generate the desired brainwave frequency like the two aforementioned technologies. Instead, I choose a built-in light and sound session in the beta, alpha, theta or delta brainwave states or a combination of those states and lay back and relax. No conscious effort is needed, these light and sound sessions gently guide my mind to my pre-chosen targeted conscious state through a process referred to as entrainment.

What exactly is entrainment and how does light and sound stimulation produce this entrainment? The method by which this entrainment occurs is known as the Frequency Following Response (FFR). Through the use of audio (headphones) and visual (eye frames) stimulation, participants are gently guided into specific states of mind. Each audio beat and light pulse is a specific frequency. Our minds “think” in terms of frequency. Brainwaves change frequencies based on neural activity within the brain, be it by hearing, touch, smell, vision and/or taste. These five senses respond to activity from the environment and transmits that information to the brain via electrical signals. Hearing and vision are considered favorable senses for affecting brainwaves safely. By presenting these beats and pulses to the brain, within a few minutes, the brain begins to mimic or follow the same frequencies as the stimuli (the beats and pulses). This process is referred to as entrainment. In essence, light and sound instruments speak to the mind in it’s own language- the language of frequency.

The Frequency Following Response that the mind experiences through light and sound stimulation provides a focus for the brain. This focus safely quells any internal dialogue or “brain chatter”, and enables the participant to reach more quickly and effectively the optimum state of mind targeted for the task at hand (i.e. energizing, learning, relaxing, etc.).

So a light and sound instrument can entrain your mind to experience different levels of your consciousness and help quell my benign anxieties. As such it is a tool, but it is a very enjoyable tool. For a whole new musical experience combine your favorite playlist with a light and sound session. You can actually see, as well as hear, the music as it travels along your brainwaves. It is also for exercising your mind. After all, your brain is like a large muscle. Use light and sound to train your brain to run faster and more efficiently; to show you how to find and access your “zone” and to help clean up that mental fuzz that occasionally interrupts our mental clarity.

The light and sound instrument that I choose is the DAVID Delight Pro by Mindalive. I’m still aware of my benign anxieties but they no longer control me. I have learned to shut off those anxious thoughts before they interfere with my normal daily life, making life so much more worth living. And I’m a whole lot more productive!

I enjoy traveling but I do not look forward to going to the airport. I usually fly out of Los Angeles International, LAX for short, although there is nothing lax about it. Must always get there early so we can wait. Oh well, these days it could be a lot worse.  It is the kind of place where you could use a stress management guide.

I really don’t mind going through the security checkpoints, just a fact of life these days. Fortunately we have that fast pass / pre check that makes things a bit easier. Then it’s finding a place by the gate to wait. And wait. People watching can be entertaining, especially the stressed, the intoxicated and/or the families with little kids having conniptions.

Once boarded and all the rigmarole is finished I look forward to the take-offs. Kind of a rush. After that comes finding something to stay occupied with for a few hours. In-flight movies can be entertaining, working on the computer gets old after a while, there’s always gazing out the window. Best to pack a mind machine on my carry-on.

Foremost is the fact that entraining my brainwaves to relax helps immensely when having to sit in a confined position for several hours. Relaxing my mind, accessing deep alpha and theta mind states, actually relaxes me mentally, emotionally and physically. Being totally relaxed is a great way to fly. Crying babies? Overly-active little kids? Obnoxious adults? Meh…


My mind machine’s headphones block out the noise, the lightframes block out the passengers and the audio/visual frequency stimulation coupled with my favorite playlist takes me on an inner-experience of complete R&R. When I’m traveling with a companion I always pack the extra user package so we both can enjoy a mind machine session simultaneously.

So the next time you find yourself buying an airline ticket, spend a few dollars extra for a mind machine of your own. It takes the stress out of airports and travel.

Being aggravated about something is not something any of us needs. Whether it is from something you did, something someone else did or an inanimate object caused it, getting aggravated throws our whole focus and ability to concentrate right out the window. It can lead to anger, saying things to others we regret or breaking that inanimate object that did absolutely nothing except not performing the way we expected.


So our blood pressure rises, our patience disappears and we become frustrated. So we take a deep breath, hold, then let it out slowly. But the thought of what happened can still linger in the back of our mind. What to do?

Its times like this a brainwave entrainment session with a mind machine can come in handy. Perhaps a 15 minute alpha session, perhaps longer. And it really doesn’t matter which light and sound machine you use as long as you choose a relaxation session. Your mind relaxes, your thoughts change from negativity to neutral, and within just a few minutes you go from consternation to enjoying positive thoughts. You realize the aggravation was then, and this is now. Its passed and you are over it.

Its that simple.

Good morning stress

So many thoughts went through my mind the first time I saw this picture. It was like ‘what a hell of a way to wake up’. Then I remembered what my wife said that when she wakes up her mental list of ‘things to do’ kicks in and how my daughter must first check her iphone for texts and voicemail. Me? I’m built for comfort. Took some time to train myself to go easy into my day, be it a workday or weekend, but I prefer to start my day in first gear, not overdrive.

So I allow myself a few extra minutes in the morning by waking up a little earlier than I have to. Only 20 minutes earlier. It enables me to enjoy a cup of coffee, play with our dog and cat, go outside and breathe the morning air, and just take some time to ease into what is always a busy day ahead.


Wasn’t always this way. Used to wake up anxious, stressed about my daily schedule. It tired me out before I even got started. So I decided to change. I bought a light and sound mind machine. It’s called the DAVID Delight Plus and has binaural beats. I use just the audio portion of the brainwave entrainment sessions in the morning. Just hooked up a pair of cheap computer speakers to the audio port of my Delight Plus and let the audio beat frequencies do their magic. Although I have the volume set at a very low level, just around the threshold of my hearing, the audio stimulation travels through the kitchen, dining room and porch, where I prefer to roam during my morning getting-started routine.


This lifestyle adjustment took less than a week before I started noticing the positive affects it had on me. I was less stressed all day long, my blood pressure lowered, I was sleeping more soundly, and I find I have more energy. I’m relaxed, more productive and feel like a better person. A customer asked: “We all have fear and most of it comes from our thoughts. And in my business there is fear of rejection, fear of looking foolish, fear of failure, etc…. How would I use the mind machine to help overcome fear?”

My answer: “By realizing fear is not worth it. Being afraid of something is one thing, but fear is like a preconceived notion that something is going to go wrong. That causes undue stress and anxiety and can lead to failure. Screw-ups are going to happen, so is being rejected. It sucks, but it happens to all of us. Make fear less important in your thoughts, try smiling when you have thoughts of fear. Fear is an unnecessary emotion when it comes to sales so learn to relax and don’t dwell on what makes you fear the unknown, instead turn those negative thoughts of fear into positive feelings of self-confidence. Try an alpha/theta session that is built into the DAVID Delight Plus or Delight Pro by Mindalive or the Procyon or Kasina by Mindplace light and sound brainwave frequency entrainment systems to get you into a hypnogogic state of consciousness where you can visualize any fear into asking yourself why you are fearful of something that hasn’t even happened yet. A few years back I met an assistant coach for a local professional basketball team that had high blood pressure. He was being constantly monitored by a nurse as his team traveled around the country making sure his blood pressure was stable. Being followed around by her 24/7 drove him crazy – his words, not mine. So I turned him on to a light and sound mind machine (also known as a brain machine, dream machine, even psychowalkman).
