This is the first article in our series about the pROSHI Neurodynamic Activator

We are excited at MindMachines.com to be offering the pROSHI (personal ROSHI) photostimulation disentrainment device. The pROSHI is unique in the world of mind machines and is nothing like a typical light and sound machine. In fact, it is NOT a light and sound machine at all. The pROSHI is a Neurodynamic Activator™ and is in a class all its own. Standard light and sound machines run preprogrammed patterns of sound and light at specifc frequencies or frequency ranges to elicit the Frequency Following Response (FFR) in order to achieve a desired brainwave state. The pROSHI approach is radically different…

pROSHI

From the pROSHI manufacturer:
“By sending specially calibrated flickering light through the eyes and into the brain, pROSHI In-Sight Glasses help “DisEntrain” the mind, freeing it from its unhealthy cyclical patterns. The brain attain a meditative “normalized” state in which it becomes totally at rest …yet attentive at the same time—similar to the brain of a Zen Master. This helps put you “In the Zone”—whether you are an Athlete, Businessperson, Doctor, Bricklayer or simply a human being trying to cope with the pains and stresses of life.

pROSHI and Glasses

The longer technical term for the above process is Vector Equilibrium Error DisEntrainment Photostimulation (VEEDP). Here’s how it works: The lights in pROSHI In-Sight glasses create an LED and MagStim flicker, driven by a Dynamic Vector Equilibruim algorithm, contained within the NeuroDynamic Activator®. This presents the brain with a complex set of phase instructions that it must accurately follow, in order to correct its own internal phase vector errors—true linear to non-linear transformation, in real-time. It is with this unique method that the brain performs its own neurofeedback duties, without any outside human intervention.

A decrease in dynamic phase error is the result. And that is exactly the outcome we seek. It is in these “quieter” EEG moments that the brain “corrects” itself. This Dynamic Self Organization (DSO) is the hallmark of NeuroFeedback systems, and will be at the vanguard of self-healing in future. “

pROSHI Glasses

I would describe the pROSHI as a visual “digital mantra” generator. A mantra is a phrase that is repeated by the meditator during meditation. It is not a recorded phrase played over and over, but rather repeated by the user over and over which means there are slight variations upon each utterance of the mantra. Unlike any other electronic device the pROSHI successfully emulates this tact. The pROSHI does not simply playback a specific session, rather it runs a program that creates a digital artificial visual mantra that contains organic variations. It is a “one-trick-pony” for sure, but it is one heck of a trick! That is the biggest strength of the pROSHI. It does one thing and does it very well. Rather than focusing on many mind states like a light and sound machine does, the pROSHI creates a deep meditative state ONLY and it does it quickly and easily. The second strength of the pROSHI is the SIMPLICITY FACTOR. It is an extremely simple device to use. There are only 3 very easy steps to follow to use it!

1.) Put on the glasses
2.) Turn on the power
3.) Close your eyes and adjust the brightness

Chuck Davis - Inventor of pROSHI

I have to admit upon first inspecting the machine I was skeptical because of the lack of sessions, sound, buttons and display screen. But after only a few minutes of using the device I was very impressed. The pROSHI is the fastest and easiest way to enter the “no time state” I have ever experienced. The “no-time state” is characterized by a lack of awareness of the passing of time. For example, what seemed like only 5 minutes was actually an hour or vice versa. I can tell you that when making note of the time before getting using the pROSHI my guess of how much time has passed when I take it off has always been wrong.

This is a pretty serious accomplishment for a mind machine.

If you are interested in experiencing a state of deep meditation – in very short order – then the pROSHI is for you.

If you desire to experience timelessness and “the no-time state of mind” – the pROSHI is what you need.

If you want the most simple mind machine that there is for achieving a deep meditatative state with no effort – get the pROSHI.

If you want one of the most powerful Neurofeedback devices that is used by professional clinicians worldwide – you guessed it, the pROSHI.

In addition to a variety of light glasses the pROSHI also includes a pair of MAGSTIM (electromagnetic stimulation) glasses. Look for a new post at mindmachines.com by me that goes in-depth regarding them in the future.

The pROSH can support either 2 users at once (with independent brightness control for each user) or 1 pair of light glasses + 1 pair of MAGSTIM glasses!

Previously pROSHI has only been available for use and sale from clinicians. MindMachines.com is proud to offer the pROSHI Neurodynamic activator!

You can order the pROSHI here: pROSHI Neurodynamic Activator

Selecting a light and sound session is simple. Your mind machine owners manual contains a complete list of all built-in sessions, plus instructions on how to custom design others.

You should first ask yourself which type of session you feel like experiencing. The session list will contain such types as energy, relaxation, creativity, meditation, learning and sleep. Decide which type you feel in the mood for and check which sessions are available within each type.

This list will also tell you what frequencies are targeted and the intended general effect. Since we are all different, that is, no two individuals think exactly alike, the general effect of each session will vary on an individual basis. In general, however, if a session deals with relaxation, all individuals should expect to experience varying degrees of relaxation and calmness. The same idea also pertains to the other types of sessions.

Session titles are usually chosen by the session designer and are based on the programmer’s experience with the session and also the experiences of test subjects. Just keep in mind that since we are all different, we will all be affected differently by each session. Therefore, the best way to determine which sessions work best for you is to experiment with each session title within each session category.

Open your owners manual to the section that lists the sessions. In the first column the sessions are broken down into types, like energize, relaxation, meditation, entertainment, etc.. Then you have the session numbers followed by their length. Next comes the titles of each session, their frequency range, type of tone used and a brief definition of what each session tries for.

Here is the easiest way to figure out which one you want to use. Find the type of session you feel like doing, then go straight to the frequency range. Of course you already know the different brain states and general characteristics of each state. So for example, say you need to relax. You go to the relaxation sessions. How deep do you want to go? The frequency range will tell you how deep the session goes, not the title of the session or the brief definition that follows. Those are informative, but it is easier to just look at what frequencies the session targets.

Two sessions target the same frequency? Check which type of tone is used. Length of session is also important. Decide what length you want. Remember, always listen to the complete session. Do not listen half way through then go out and drive the freeways. That is not conducive to a healthy lifestyle. Besides, most light and sound units give you the opportunity to either lengthen or shorten the time of each session. Also, most allow you to change the type of tone for each session. Over time, you will probably try all of the sessions, you will know the sessions you like the most and you will stop referring to the owners manual when you go to use your system. That’s okay. That says you know what your system has to offer and how you can manipulate the parameters to suit your specific needs.

Many sessions target more than one brainwave category. Say the purpose of doing your session today is for creativity. You are working on a project and you need some fresh ideas, but you are facing a deadline for getting it completed. Do you do a short creativity/theta session for some quick inspiration or a half-hour creativity/energize session to conjure up fresh ideas and simultaneously produce the energy to write it down really fast? Try the short creativity/theta session. Why? Because at sessions end, you will be back at your normal low beta state, feeling relaxed and fresh and hopefully full of new ideas. And your focus will also be enhanced. Being in a relaxed and focused frame of mind should enable you to write what needs writing in a fashion that meets your deadline. Your mind should also possess the clarity to carry you through to project’s end.

On the other hand, how late were you up last night? Do you need the alertness associated with high beta/energize stimulation? Can you spare the extra time doing a longer session and still meet your deadline? Say you need the alertness associated with the energize session but lack the half-hour to do the session. Why not take the best from both sessions? All you have to do is shorten the length of the creativity/energize session. If it is 30 minutes, make it 15 instead. Just make sure at session’s end that you sit down to finish your project and not run out to hit some tennis balls.

That is just an example of how you can adjust the built-in sessions of your instrument to suit your specific needs. When doing a session, see if this statement holds true for you: When experiencing a beta or gamma session, the colors are predominantly black, white and grey with a lot of intricate patterns. When doing alpha, theta and delta sessions, there are more colors, lots of green, blue, red, yellow, etc., and there are more swirls and blends rather than patterns. I am not sure why that is. I do know all those visuals are produced by your mind. And after performing thousands of light and sound sessions on clients, friends and associates, I have found this to be the norm rather than the exception. But as for why that happens, ask your local neurologist. They usually know everything.

You must need to know if light and sound stimulation is safe for you to use. Generally speaking, the answer is yes, when used properly and with understanding. For example, do not listen to a session half way through then go out and drive a car. Allow the session to end, bringing your awareness back to your normal low beta state, before performing tasks involving heavy machinery. Do not use light and sound without professional medical supervision if you have epilepsy, heart trouble, latent seizure tendencies or are photosensitive. Some sessions promote the emergence of suppressed events and issues. If you have never had therapy or have trouble handling these issues, be very careful in choosing sessions. If you find yourself as an at risk individual, seek advice from your physician before using a pulsed light device.

Remember: everyone is different. No two people think exactly alike. The effects from using light and sound equipment will vary from individual to individual. So play it safe. If you have questions, get the answers before experiencing light and sound sessions.

Light and sound instrumentation is not intended as a treatment for any mental, emotional or physical ailment or condition. Persons with a history of epilepsy, photoepilepsy or any form of brain seizure, whether knowingly or not, should not use a pulsed light device without professional medical supervision. Latent seizure tendencies, brain injuries, toxemia, drug abuse and unspecified other conditions, known or unknown to the user, are conditions which may produce brain seizures.

Are you an individual who would be at risk by using light and sound technology? Less than 2% of the U.S. population are likely to ever experience a photoconvulsive seizure from pulsed light stimulation (Newmark & Penry in Niedermeyer 1982).

A proven method of determining whether or not you are prone to a seizure of this type is to be screened by a qualified technician using EEG analysis prior to using light and sound equipment. However, many epileptics may not experience any adverse effects from light and sound because they are not photoconvulsive (Stevens in Niedermeyer 1982). Still, it is wise to seek professional medical advice prior to using light and sound equipment if you have a history of epileptic or photoepileptic tendencies. Even though medical professionals can identify most of us who have these tendencies by reviewing our individual family histories, some people slip through the screening process undetected who are actually at risk. Why? Because some may be totally asymptomatic or have forgotten that when they were young (commonly between the ages of six and fifteen) they did have a seizure.

The following list of questions are very important for you to ask yourself prior to using light and sound, but collectively should not be construed as a reliable screening procedure:

      1. Have you ever had periods of blanking-out or have suffered from any form of convulsive seizure?

     2. Have flashing lights ever made you nauseous or uncomfortable?

     3. Has anyone in your family ever been prone to seizures?

     4. Are you an individual in the beginning stages of drug or alcohol withdrawal?

     5. Are you suffering from severe medical disorders?

     6. Do you suffer from any type of mental illness?

     7. Do you have a pacemaker or are you pregnant?

If you answered yes to any of these questions you should consider yourself at risk for possible adverse effects from utilizing pulsed light stimulation.

If you find you are unable to use light and sound because of possible adverse effects, there is an alternative. Sound only. This utilization of audio frequency sessions has proven quite successful in each one of my learning and relaxation programs. The ideal sound-only alternative, which was developed by Christopher Oliver and Michael Landgraf, is the 515 MP3.

Light and sound instruments give you the ability to control your mental states. Because each person has their own psychological makeup, no one can guarantee you will experience positive feelings after every session. Using light and sound is a personal choice, and the better informed you are, the better experience you will have.

Before ending this discussion concerning the possibility of adverse effects, I feel it is important to address one issue that a majority of my clients and associates have, at one time or another, asked about. If you consume alcohol or drugs (legal or otherwise) before experiencing a light and sound session, many researchers contend that you will automatically have a brain seizure. This is not true. Chances are you will, but it is not automatic. After fifteen years of sponsoring light and sound programs, not once has there been an adverse reaction to light and sound from any of the participants in these programs. Many were on prescribed medications, while others were confronting their drug or alcohol dependency. Others combined alcohol with light and sound during social gatherings and I repeat, not once did anyone experience any adverse effects.

Here is one example, in a social setting, where individuals consumed alcohol prior to experiencing light and sound. A few years back, representatives of a major international music company asked for my assistance at a party they were having to publicize a new rock group. It was held at a very respectable nightclub on Santa Monica Boulevard. The news media was well represented at this function.

During the course of the festivities, I performed over seventy light and sound sessions on curious individuals who wanted to experience what light and sound was all about. I can not and will not say drugs of any kind were used by any of the attendees. I can say alcohol was consumed. The majority of those experiencing light and sound sessions did indulge. In a way it was almost comical. I asked each person before setting them up on light and sound if they were under the influence of either alcohol or drugs. Of course they all answered no, even with red eyes and silly grins that told me otherwise. Now if I believed everything that has been written about this combination, I never would have agreed to hook anyone up. But no one suffered any adverse effects unless you term having a great time adverse.

Here is an example where prescribed medications could possibly lead to adverse effects when combined with light and sound, yet none were experienced. A few years back, a client started EEG / neurofeedback training after being diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Over the course of the previous ten months, she had been prescribed over sixty different medications to combat what at that time was an undiagnosed illness. Yes, you read that correctly. Over sixty. She was gradually weaned from the majority of the medications and began utilizing light and sound to help her cope with daily stressors while she did her neurofeedback training. Although she was still taking some of her prescribed medications while experiencing light and sound, not once did she suffer any adverse effects from the combination.

I am certainly not advocating the use of alcohol or drugs. And I do not advocate their use with light and sound equipment. What I am saying is people have been known to use both simultaneously and not experience any adverse effects. That is a fact.

What looks to be two identical lightframes have different polarities, the lightframe RCA jack is too big for the light port of the mind machine, how come some lightframes connect with RCA jacks and others have mini-USB connectors? Often happens when you use one manufacturers mindmachine with another manufacturers lightframe. Manufacturers design mind machines, light emitting eye frames and various other accessories that fit their vision of what a light and sound machine should look like and it?s built-in software abilities. Get the type(s) of lightframe made for the mind machine you own. Wasn?t always like this, but as the technology advances so does a manufacturers ability to seek perfection. And that?s a good thing, but what?s so important with lightframes? Color and comfort matters.

Back in the 1980?s, when I was first turned on to a light and sound system, the lightframes were red LEDs. To my mind, the red stimulation produced a black background three dimensionally filled with some of the most radically colored patterns and visuals ever created. Yes, the frequency sessions affected my mental, emotional and physical state of being, but my brain was tuned to the visuals and music I had playing. It was great. Better than a brain tune-up.

Today there are so many lightframe variations and so many choices. If this is going to be your first mind machine and you would prefer starting with one type color stimulation, go for the white lightframes. The visuals they produce can get outrageous, having a profoundly positive effect on your state of mind.

Considering neurotechnology affects the mind and most newcomers to light and sound know very little about how exactly, it is best to have information describing the color aspect of light and sound mindmachine stimulation. The more you personally know about this technology, the better the choice you will make when choosing a mind machine that will best meet your own personal needs.

Everybody has a favorite color, like wearing khaki pants or a green shirt, perhaps the walls of your home are Navajo white, maybe even a mixture. Then there is that subconscious element to consider, like if you were in an auto accident and you were driving a blue car. Would blue still be your favorite color or would it conjure up negative feelings stemming from that unfortunate event? Lots of variables enter into deciding what color you would be happiest with.

Red may be a ‘warm’ color, often thought to be more appropriate for beta sessions, but not necessarily. Red LED lightframes, when used with your eyes closed, stimulates the cortex of your brain into generating some of the most delightful shades, blends and swirls of colors possible. Red LED stimulation can help you relax.

Yellow, orange and red are viewed as ?warm? colors and are stimulating (excitatory). These LED color lightframes are often utilized when experiencing sessions containing higher frequencies such as beta. ?Cool? colors like green, blue and violet are calming (inhibitory). These colors are most often used with sessions having lower frequency stimulation, all targeting the deeper brainwave states known as alpha, theta and delta.

Although any color of light would deliver the benefits of a light and sound session, specific colors will help get you there faster, even more deeply. When you are considering the various colors, wondering which color would best apply to your situation and what a particular color is normally associated with, here is a generally accepted generic guide: use blue color stimulation for delta (sleep / clearing); use green for theta (meditation / visualization); for alpha (learning / relaxation) use yellow; and for beta (focus / energy) use orange or red.

Here are three different methods for producing pulsed light stimulation. Most manufacturers use LED bulbs, incandescent bulbs and RGB-based LEDchips. The LED style is better than the incandescent variety. Incandescent bulbs tend to have a bleed-over effect at higher frequencies, they just can?t turn on and off (blink) efficiently at high rates. LED bulbs can. The LED-based chips are even better.

Left and right color independent eye control gives you greater control of the pulsed light stimulation. It allows you to simultaneously activate or relax either your left or right brain hemisphere. With no means of eye control, the pulsed light stimulation being generated affects both hemispheres of the brain equally. For overall calming or energizing, that is fine. But what if you wish to work on your right hemisphere, not your left, and vice versa? That?s when having this control proves advantageous. Simply stated, if you would like to activate the right hemispheric region of your brain, but not the left, select a warm color (yellow, orange or red for instance) for the left eye of the lightframe and for the right, select a cooler color (such as violet, blue or green).

Even though we all think and are affected differently by pulsed light stimulation, certain colors appear to work best, in a generalized kind of way, for helping to enhance certain abilities or to achieve certain sensations and emotions. Based on what I have read, personally experienced and received as feedback from my customers these past twenty-plus years, here are the most common colors for pulsed light and what they are used for:

Red - invigoration, extroversion, strength, activity, vitality, energy, action. Red provides a wide range of colorful visuals for most people.

Orange - subconscious, relationships, interaction, creativity, change, sexual, social. Although soft and subtle, orange can invigorate and energize the light and sound listener. Sometimes referred to as the color Amber, it falls between red and yellow. If you find the color red too intense and green too dim, try this color.

Yellow - concentration, learning, thinking, idealism, memory, sunny, focus. Yellow is highly recommended for soft , yet subtle light and sound experiences. The color yellow is considered to be excellent for use while studying.

White - effective for working with imagery, relaxation and visualization. White generates a richness in colors and sense of dimension that no other pulsed color can imitate. White can attain a brightness intensity similar to red while generating color pulsations that appear to float before your eyes. White light is the most popular color used, offering full spectrum stimulation to ensure that the red, green and blue cones of the retina receive full stimulation similar to the natural light spectrum.

Green - compassion, revitalizing, peaceful, renewal, calming, balance, healing, love. Preferred by those experiencing certain degrees of light sensitivity. The color green is associated with nature and with heightening the emotional qualities of the heart.

Blue - use for communication, contemplation, contentment, meditation, relaxation, sensitivity, creativity and sleep. Blue will generate a profound sense of calmness and a feeling of deep relaxation and is believed to contribute to the creation of ordered thought and harmonious moods.

Biofeedback is a method for treating people to improve their health by using signals from their own bodies. Therapists and psychologists use biofeedback to help tense and anxious clients learn to relax and to help their patients cope with pain.

There is a good chance you have already used a form of biofeedback. For instance, ever gone outside to walk the dog on a cold and blustery day? Your body told you it was cold, prompting you to wear a jacket. How about when you stand on a scale and it shows you gained weight? Time to consider doing a little cutting back. And at sometime in our life we have had our temperature taken, thinking perhaps we are exhibiting signs of illness. If you were running a temperature higher than 98.6, then would be a good time to rest and drink liquids, and of course, contact your physician. Clinician?s machines can find a person’s internal bodily functions with much greater sensitivity and precision than in the past. The results of each biofeedback session are valuable for both the patient and the therapist, as the information can be applied to gauge and direct the next treatment session.

Biofeedback training can be demanding on patients. Patients need to review their daily routine to learn if they are contributing to their own negative feelings. Patients need also personally commit to practicing biofeedback training awareness or relaxation exercises every day. They must change their routine, their day-to-day lifestyle, and accept much of the responsibility for maintaining their own health.

Brainwaves are the electrical wave patterns generated in every person’s brain. These waves vary according to level of consciousness, sub-consciousness and unconsciousness and are characterized by four distinct types of brainwaves. Each of these electrical wave patterns has distinctly different ways of perceiving, processing, learning and knowing information. All of these brain waves are produced at all times. However, a predominance of a specific desired brainwave state can be created at will, which allows a person to potentialize his or her capabilities towards achieving human excellence.

For a better understanding of what brain waves are and how those are utilized in biofeedback sessions, brainwave frequencies are described in terms of hertz (Hz), or cycles per second, which are measured by an electroencephalogram (EEG). The four general categories of brainwave frequencies and their main characteristics are:

Gamma brainwave frequencies are a high frequency pattern beginning at thirty-five hertz. There has been some evidence that gamma frequencies are associated with states of peak performance. Most light and sound instruments have the capability to generate gamma frequencies. While in this brainwave state, sensations are centered on being mentally, emotionally and physically “charged” or extremely energized. These frequencies are the highest known brainwave patterns, but are considered by some researchers to be part of the beta frequency category.

Beta brainwaves are the next highest frequency pattern, ranging from thirteen to thirty-four hertz, and can be separated into three sub-categories. The first is high beta, ranging from nineteen to thirty-four hertz. When high beta is the dominant brainwave state, anxiety and stress are most likely to occur. The second sub-category is mid beta, with frequencies ranging from fifteen to eighteen hertz. Mid beta is characterized by action, with focus on external surroundings. The third is SMR beta (Sensorimotor Rhythm), ranging from thirteen to fifteen hertz. While in this state, focus is also on external surroundings, but the individual is more relaxed than in mid beta. Within SMR is fourteen hertz, which is gaining attention from researchers and clinicians utilizing EEG / neurofeedback instrumentation. The true benefit of creating fourteen hertz in humans has yet to be determined, but a recent study at the University of California at Los Angeles found that felines could produce fourteen hertz at will, while humans cannot.

Generally speaking, beta brainwaves are characterized by logical, analytical and intellectual thinking, verbal communication and awareness of surroundings.

Alpha brainwaves are a frequency pattern ranging from eight to twelve hertz. They most commonly occur when we are calm and relaxed, yet mentally alert. These brainwaves are also present during daydreaming.

Theta brainwaves range from four to seven hertz, characterized by being deeply relaxed and inwardly focused. This brainwave state is also associated with rapid learning and the assimilation of new information with high retention, heightened motivation to activate goals, bursts of creativity, insight and new behavior patterns.

Delta brainwaves range from five-tenths to three hertz and are associated with being extremely relaxed, characterized by sleep.

Researchers have proven that brainwave frequencies determine what brainwave state is being experienced at any given time. By measuring the production of brainwaves through the utilization of EEG (electroencephalogram) equipment, the frequencies that produce these various brain states can be tracked on a computer monitor. As mentioned earlier, these frequencies are generated in every person’s brain, and are the result of outside stimulation that has been passed to the brain via electrical signals from our different senses. Light and sound instruments stimulate the neural activity of our vision and hearing, and can safely guide our minds to produce specific frequencies that are associated with the four general brainwave categories.

There is absolutely nothing wrong about going to see your physician or therapist for alleviating anxieties, modifying behavior and a myriad of other symptoms biofeedback has proven effective in treating. The drawbacks are the time it takes to adequately overcome your unwanted symptoms, the amount of practice necessary to progress, the need for scheduling multiple appointments and the cost of each visit.

Choosing biofeed-in mindmachines that can target the same frequencies as a biofeedback monitor, in far less time thereby speeding the progress of the individual, done personally in the comfort of your home rather that scheduling appointments elsewhere, and the obvious savings on money (you can buy a light and sound biofeed-in mindmachine for less than visiting a biofeedback specialist for several sessions), gives you a beneficial and cost-effective alternative.

Remember: Excelling in biofeedback takes time and is dependent upon the patient to access the desired brainwave frequency at will, with no outside help. Biofeed-in is just the opposite. Biofeed-in gently leads you to the targeted brainwave frequency state, without any conscious effort on your part.

? you do not need to schedule an appointment, pay a therapist, or rush to make your appointment on time. So keep it simple, use a biofeed-in mindmachine, when you desire, and you too will realize the advantage of owning your own mind machine far outweighs the hassles of practicing biofeedback sessions with the accompaniment of a well-paid clinician.

In the first article about addiction relapse prevention treatment I described why a recovering addict should utilize a light and sound mind machine. Now I will describe how a recovering addict should use a pulsed light and sound mind machine as a modality for preventing addictive relapses.

This is with the understanding that the addict has sought medical treatment, graduated from a rehabilitation center or is regularly attending AA, NA or other meetings that deal with their personal addiction. It is also understood that only those who have the personal desire and motivation to kick their addiction(s) are those who stand the best chance of conquering their problem.

As an addict, you obviously understand that only a small percentage of individuals have the chance of living addiction free for the remainder of their life. I have heard about addiction centers claim 80% to 100% success rate. My question to those who make such claims is: ?Is that immediately upon their clients graduating from their programs?? or ?Have these centers conducted follow-ups with their graduates 5, 10, 15 years after graduating to see if their previous clients are still addiction free?? I do not believe in such claims. They are outrageous. Relapse happens and it is not the lack of therapy or information provided by the medical community or help groups, it is the fact that addicts may revert to their old ways, for any number of reasons.

Using a light and sound mind machine should help you deal with the thoughts, impulses and urges of reverting back to your addictive behaviors. I recommend the DAVID Delight Pro by Mindalive. This mind machine is designed to help you relax, focus on the moment, and alleviate unnecessary brain chatter that can lead to stinking thinking. That may be an old term, but it is and will always be relevant.

Before embarking on your personal journey of using the Delight Pro, write down what you want to achieve: your goals and why they are important to you. Create a simple plan for realizing these goals. Remember: baby steps. Don?t make things difficult; don?t create goals that are unrealistic. Keep things simple! And keep what you?ve written close to your mind machine. It?s a good idea to make a copy of what you?ve written and keep it in your wallet or purse and refer to it when you feel the need to review it. I did. It acts like a booster; a reminder of what is important to you when doing a light and sound session is unavailable.

You do not need to do a session every minute of the day. As you use your mind machine you will soon realize what works best for you. Think of it this way: every one is different; every one is affected differently by outside events. What will work best for one individual may not work as well for you. So be aware of your mental, emotional and physical states and decide what is best for you. Some people listen to a session for 60 minutes a day. Some do a short 15 to 20 minute session a day, sometimes twice, other times once; it?s your decision. But when you do experience a session, focus on the words you wrote, the things you wish to achieve, the things you could not possibly achieve if you were still an addict and not recovering.

When using the Delight Pro, start with session 3, the Alpha Relaxer, in the Meditation category. Use this session for a week. Then move on to session 4, Schumann Resonance and session 5, Theta, for another week to two, your choice. Now move on to the Feeling Better category. Experience all five of those sessions over the next few weeks. You should feel less anxiety, a greater sense of relaxation, begin to sleep better and you should notice a profound decrease in negative brain chatter. As you progress, utilize sessions 3 and 4 in the Energize category and sessions 2 and 3 in the Brain Brightening category. There is no set timetable for utilizing each specific session, rather, proceed with what you feel to be comfortable. There is no rush to experience them all at once. Just relax, focus on the words you?ve written while experiencing each session, and allow yourself to be patient.

When doing a session, keep the brightness of the lights low with your eyes closed. The more you experience sessions, your eyes will build tolerance to the brightness and you may increase the intensity. But always keep the brightness at a comfortable level. Brighter is not better or more effective. The same applies to the audio volume. Keep the sound of the pulsed audio beats just below the threshold of your hearing. Just like the light intensity, audio volume at a low, comfortable level is best. Having the volume set high does not make it any better or any more effective. For a complete understanding of how best to use a mindmachine and to learn how to maximize your session experiences, read the easy-to-understand ebook ?Mind States / An Introduction to Light & Sound Technology?. The last chapter of ?Mind States? contains a 30-Day Journal for you to write down your reactions to the sessions you have just listened to. It is of immense value for looking back and seeing the chances that have been occurring to you as you progress from day one to day thirty. You should be amazed at the subtle changes that have occurred to your mental, emotional and physical states of being. Use it? you’?ll be thankful you did!

What makes my opinion about addiction relapse treatment prevention any more meaningful than those on staff at rehabilitation centers? I’ve been there. I am an alcoholic. I have been sober since July 10th, 1985.

That anniversary means more to me than my actual birthday. And I am proud of my 25+ years of sobriety, but every time I think of that accomplishment, every time I tell vodka you are just a part of my past, a part of me feels sad. Sad for the friends that went through rehab with me and are no longer here to share mutual joy and tremendous relief for getting that devil of a monkey off our backs.

Yes, even today those stinking thoughts still hit me out of nowhere, and although I reject such thoughts, they are an involuntary occurrence that makes me think “where the hell did that thought come from?” After 25+ years of sobriety, they still happen, albeit less frequently, and I now know those thoughts will always crop up. It’s just the way it is.

DAVID Delight Mind Machine

When I went through rehab, twelve of us were going to graduate within days of each other. We felt a common bond, a camaraderie that we all wanted to have continue past our stay at the rehab. Within months, literally, ten of those graduates stopped communicating with Debra and me. Two had died, eight reverted to their old ways. Soon after, Debra disappeared, having kept her return to alcohol a secret. I was the only remaining sober graduate. What made me the fortunate graduate? What caused me to succeed when all my beloved rehab companions failed?

It wasn’t the rehab center! My counselor said I’d receive a follow-up call in 6 months, again at my one year anniversary, then again after two years. She never called, no one from that center called. It made me feel like they didn’t care. They appeared only to be concerned with in-house patients because that’s where the money is. Heck, at least with a follow-up phone call I could have been a statistic. And a positive statistic at that!

So what did I do differently than my companions once we were back in society, trying to build a new life? I was the only one who utilized a light and sound instrument. An InnerQuest IQ-III to be exact. Bless the late Rob Robinson for having his products available! I firmly believe having a light and sound mind machine at my immediate disposal for use when those ‘bad thoughts’ started infiltrating my mind, my thought processes, and my mental and emotional disposition made all the difference in the world. I was the only one to use a mind machine out of our graduating class of twelve, and I am the only one still sober, still alive. I don’t care how administrators or therapists feel about that statement, because I know it, firmly believe it as the one variable that helped me maintain my sobriety whereas my friends, who did not have light and sound mind machines at their disposal- failed.

iLightz Pro by Mind Gear

It’s time to put as much emphasis on staying clean/sober after graduation as it is for getting clean/sober while being an in-house patient. Light/sound mind machine technology has the sessions that can help control addictive behaviors, to help lay the foundations for a positive mental and emotional attitude, and for giving the recovering addict instant access for overcoming that stinking thinking thought pattern that strikes at any time, anywhere. Put stronger emphasis on relapse prevention and you will see less failure rates among rehab graduates, which in turn improves the credibility of rehabilitational programs.

Think about it: I was the only one to use light and sound after graduating and I am the only one still sober.

AV3x Digital Meditation

So you are probably saying that’s just one example. Phooey! I went through it, have you? What of all the others I’ve met since my graduation who also experience addictive behaviors? Be it for sex addiction, cocaine, downers, meth, you name it. They’ve all taken to using light and sound mind machines because it personally helps them cope. So the next time you are sitting in a staff meeting, discussing how to improve your success rate and increase your funding, look no further than www.Mindmachines.com. You’ll find a very cost-effective and highly beneficial tool that can improve your program’s success rate, which in turn will help when submitting paperwork for additional funding, and oh yes, actually give your graduates a fighting chance at staying clean and sober for quite possibly the rest of their life.

Deep Relaxation MP3

Over the years I have been involved with several rehabilitation centers as a consultant for getting neurofeedback and/or light and sound programs initiated (learning / relaxation). Basically, I would show them what these mind machines look like and how to use them, how they can be incorporated into their existing methods of treatment, and instructing them on how to maximize the sessions for the benefit of their patients. Why I choose to do this is to open the eyes of therapists and administrators to the cost- effectiveness and benefits that mind machines offer. Especially when many rehabs are facing extreme cutbacks and even closure. But more importantly, I do this because as beneficial as the treatment patients receive while staying at a rehab center are, most rehabs tend to turn their patients loose after fulfilling their time at the center, telling them good luck and to call if they feel setbacks approaching. Shouldn’t graduates be given tools to take home with them for preventing relapses from occurring?

Once out, patients find themselves in a world that hasn’t changed. Only they have changed. Granted the only way an addict can truly stop their addiction is to really want to quit, to change their routine once back in society, and to abstain from visiting the places they frequented before checking into a rehab. But it is so hard for an addict to do this without mental and emotional support. This is where I believe most rehabs fail. They put so much emphasis on treatment while the patients are attending the rehab, and seemingly have little time to keep track of what happens to their patients once they graduate.

I have seen too many individuals fall back into their addictive behaviors because such mental and emotional support groups are not available in time of need. Is that a cop-out reason to revert to old ways? Sure. Not being able to make new friends who are clean and/or sober causes them to seek out old friends that shared the same addiction? Yes, that too is a pretty lame excuse. But when the urge to revert to old ways is strong, when that old addictive ‘friend’ is beckoning for their return, the addictive cycle rears it’s ugly head. A large percentage of ex-patients become new patients once again. With the cost of rehabilitative treatment being so astronomical, and the time necessary to stay at these facilities lasting from several days to several weeks, even months, I would think more rehab centers would put a stronger emphasis on relapse prevention; meaning once an individual graduates, greater importance should be placed on assisting them re-integrate into society, re-integrate with themselves, and make available more tools for the graduate for immediate utilization of overcoming that ‘stinking thinking’ urge that can pop up at any time, for any reason. Those thoughts just occur out of nowhere, and when they happen, it is an anxious and frightening experience for the newly clean/sober individual. They don’t get these thoughts because they want to, they get these thoughts because addictions are waking nightmares. Stinking thinking, in my opinion, falls short in describing just how awful these urges and thoughts can be.

It is not my intention to upset the administrators of rehabs, but with many rehab counselors and therapists themselves once being addicted to ‘their favorite friend’, and often experiencing personal relapses themselves, rehabs must wake up to the increased need of having tools accessible for their graduates. Tools that can help overcome those sudden urges faster than calling a counselor and being told they will get right back to you after they finish their in-house group counseling session.

That is the potential of light and sound mind machines in relapse recovery. It is just one tool to help maintain a clean/sober life. It has worked for me, it has worked for the dozens of people I’ve met since beginning my own recovery, and it can work for today’s addicts trying desperately to quit the very addiction that is killing them. It’s time you give this modality serious thought, that is, if you are actually serious in helping your patients remain clean/sober.

EEG Neurofeedback

EEG Neurofeedback is the voluntary regulation of brain wave activity. It is a learned response, with applications including the modulation of arousal levels, regulating your sleep/wake cycles, dealing with cognitive processes, processing sensory information, correcting inappropriate motor responses, controlling moods and emotions and helping deal with memory issues.

EEG Neurofeedback

Here are two main applications within the EEG neurofeedback discipline: the first is Alpha and Theta training, which centers on relaxation and improved creativity. New research also indicates these EEG protocols can deal with overcoming the effects of alcoholism. The second application deals with Sensorimotor Rhythm (SMR) and Beta training. These protocols are generally aimed at improving mental functioning and the remediation of manifest deficits, such as for symptoms of epileptic and ADHD behaviors.

Those 2 paragraphs were my initial introduction to what EEG neurofeedback could accomplish. That was back in 1992. Since then a plethora of information has been published that gives credence to the successes of applying EEG neurofeedback in a multitude of ways (refer to issues of the AVS Journal).

But allow me to backtrack a bit.

I must give credit to Drs. Siegfried Othmer and Jerry Cunningham for making me aware of EEG technology and allowing me to learn about utilizing their equipment. Yes that was quite a few years ago, but their generosity sparked my interest in this young, yet exciting new field. Truth be told, I felt like a lab animal for those first 3 ten-hour days of instruction, as I soon realized when they uttered the words ?I wonder if?? meant I was the target of their thoughts. Thankfully, those two pioneers in this field were medical professionals and used protocols that when connected to the EEG neurofeedback system, made me feel more like a little kid at an amusement park, I could feel/sense my mental, emotional and physical states reacting in a different, more positive way.

Given time, I actually felt like I was contributing to their conversations rather than being the one person always hooked up to their EEG system ?to see what happens?. Either way I didn?t really care. On the one hand I was listening to 2 very respected professionals and on the other was able to experience sensations I?d never realized was possible.

One day we were comparing EEG protocols when the topic of adding adjunctive modalities into EEG neurofeedback sessions came up, with the goal of helping their clients achieve more quickly the targeted brainwave frequency of a session, theoretically enabling the client to proceed in their progress faster than normally believed.

This led to incorporating EEG Spectrum?s EEG Neurofeedback System with light and sound mindmachines, sound-only generators, an audio/visual mixer and the Symmetron motion platform (complete with 7-degree front/back pitch, 360-degree orbital movement and two transducers beneath the mattress for binaural beat tactile stimulation.

Once everything was connected, we were ready to do some serious brainwave research, or in my case, observing how we could enhance the effectiveness of EEG Neurofeedback sessions. One element was missing. For Alpha ? Training, closed-eye lightframes worked wonders. But a different type of lightframe was needed for SMR training. The solution was developing an open-eye style lightframe. I credit Jeff Labno for coming up with that idea. The result? EEG Neurofeedback became an all-encompass method for positive brain wave training. The proof was seeing the therapist?s monitor: increased entrainment ability emanating from the readout of the client?s brainwaves.

One hurdle remained, however. For prolonged EEG neurofeedback sessions, a different form of audio stimulus was needed. The mind is capable of foretelling what frequencies are going to be coming, which could lead to a loss of interest and decrease the effects of entrainment. Sine waves: boring. Binaural beats: decent but limited in design. Dual independent binaural beats: perfect. The human mind needs more than a single tone to remain entrained for a prolonged period of time. Binaural beats work, but are limited in designing entraining frequencies. Dual independent binaural beats are quite different. By using 4 distinct frequencies in a variety of ways, the mind maintains prolonged interest, with the effect of remaining entrained by the stimulation and thereby receiving a greater quality session. The result? You progress with your training faster.

EEG Neurofeedback is an excellent modality for treating symptoms sans pharmaceutical medications, and more. And there are highly qualified medical professionals that are making great strides in this field. Drs. Tom Collura and Rayma Ditson-Sommer to name two. Not to be different or aggravate professionals that I have the utmost respect for, but I have found implementing EEG Neurofeedback in a different way better suits my approach.

After performing several hundred hours of EEG Neurofeedback sessions on clients (and here I must add that Dr. Jerry Cunningham was my supervisor), I began to observe certain tendencies during the EEG sessions. For example, if the audio stimulation being used was generated in a synchronized manner, the client?s ability to achieve the targeted brainwave frequency was enhanced, and when given alternating pulsed stimulus, the ability to achieve the target frequency was inhibited. Humm? There were plenty of other tendencies happening, but this one intrigued me the most.

So EEG Neurofeedback sessions show the therapist just what is occurring in particular parts of their client?s mind. That?s a good thing. But the amount of sessions needed before any improvement can be observed with their client(s) can often exceed over twenty appointments. Given the cost of just one session means multiple sessions can be rather expensive. That?s really not a good thing.

As mentioned earlier, many strides have taken place in the field of EEG Neurofeedback. Better instruments, more sensitive readouts, remote use of EEG units, and hopefully you are sitting down for this: some insurance companies actually cover EEG Neurofeedback treatment.

EEG or Mind Machines?

But for me, personally, after years of utilizing EEG Neurofeedback, light and sound mind machines, tactile stimulation and various other modalities, I find EEG treatment to be unnecessarily costly and downright slow in rectifying mental, emotional and physical ailments. I prefer specially designed sessions built into light and sound mindmachines. They are better accepted by my customers and clients as these machines cost far less than EEG equipment, can be used almost everywhere at your own convenience, with goals being met far faster than a multitude of EEG sessions. And consider this: for the price you pay a therapist to conduct your 20 or more EEG sessions, you can purchase your own EEG system, with training! For an effective mind machine that would meet your specific needs, they range in price from $200 to $600. For the correct EEG neurofeedback system, far more. Big difference!

But EEG sessions showed me several idiosyncrasies that assisted in making light and sound mindmachines produce more effective sessions. That ?in sync / alternating stimulus? observation was just one.

Today, I find the best use for my EEG system is to function as a form of real-time documentation of how effective and entraining a mindmachine session actually is. When I test a light/sound session and view it on the EEG monitor, I get an actual idea of how entraining a mindmachine session is, or isn?t. If the EEG readout illustrates the session?s entrainment qualities, that session is a keeper. If the readout shows very little entrainment ability, then the session is deleted. In short, for me, nothing beats an EEG neurofeedback system for documenting the effectiveness of a light and sound mindmachine session.

“Could Binaural Beats be the next Big Brother technology for public brainwave entrainment?”

Why is it so few people realize the potential of binaural beat audio frequency stimulation in a public environment? Entraining the brainwaves of an entire audience via specially designed audio frequencies happens – and the conscious mind can be totally unaware. As you consider this for even a moment you will quickly realize that it is already happening all around you in the shadows. Is this a Big Brother technology? Well, certainly it has been used by big business and various government agencies for quite some time now…

Big Brother's binaural beat brainwave Entrainment?

Consider television. Big Brother loves television. Take certain commercials for example. Besides all the dialog, products plastered across the screen and how easy it is to buy the product, have you ever heard something else… a tone perhaps? Thankfully the television industry appears 9 lightyears behind successful brainwave entrainment. Influence our mood? Yes, that’s possible. But actually incorporate a variation of binaural beat brainwave entrainment frequencies? They obviously don’t know how to do it properly. We have heard them try. But what if they figure it out?

That’s a mass media example. What about on a more local level? For instance, on three different occasions attorneys have inquired as to the possibility or even validity that targeted binaural beats are affecting their clients. 3 different attorneys from different regions, none aware of the other’s case, asking the same thing. Their clients state that they are being affected by unwanted pulsed audio brainwave beats and it is affecting their mental and emotional coping skills. Here’s where it gets interesting. Two claim that the perpetrators of these brainwave entrainment beats live a few blocks away, the other over a mile. No one living directly between the purported prepetrator of these alledged transmissions of entrainment and the targeted recipient are affected. Now, how can someone generate entraining beats and have them disappear until reaching the targeted home? Mind you the attorneys stated there are no hidden speakers or tech tools that could receive such frequencies in any area of their clients home. The first two inquiries were met with sympathy for their client and a personal attempt to gain an understanding of just what the heck they could possibly be thinking. But the attorneys were more concerned with an answer that would benefit their clients and less interested in helping me understand just how foolhardy they are for representing clients that come up with stuff like that. The last attorney, after hearing their speal, left no choice but to be recommended an idiotic solution to their idiotic questions… it was suggested their client consider wearing a metal helmet. As flippant the response to that ridiculous inquiry appears, it is also difficult to describe to these attorneys just how such a phenomenon can’t really work. But then again, what if there really are a handful of individuals that can? Other attorneys have inquired about the use of brainwave entrainment technology during depositions. Attorneys certainly like to make adversaries nervous and this can absolutely be accomplished using audio brainwave entrainment. So, if you are deposed some day and start feeling nervous for no apparent reason – LISTEN for the near silent audio tones that might be binaural beats directed at you. Of course, these inquiries go well beyond attorneys, but there are some things we are just not willing to talk about in specific detail for reasons which, by now you realize are quite obvious.

If the use of binaural beats for public brainwave entrainment begins to attract even more elements of Big Brotherhood, wouldn’t it be beneficial for all of us to know?

Conversely, if binaural beats for brainwave entrainment can in reality be positive, for personal and room-size use, wouldn’t you like to take advantage of this technology?

binaural beats = Mind Control for the masses?

Consider the high stress responsibilities of 911 operators and police officers. Many use binaural beat entrainment frequencies to become calm and focused. Retail outlets, albeit far less stressful, found such ‘Big Brother’ technology, when placed in the employee work area, resulted in the tedious paperwork requirements being done more quickly and correctly, not to mention an uptick in employee harmony. Even teachers have observed an increase in classroom atttentiveness. And then there are the reception rooms where people have an appointment, rush to arrive on time, have to wait in the reception area, and try to clear their minds of the traffic and everything else that happened that day and try to relax and focus on why they’ve come to their appointment. A relaxing binaural beat entrainment session pulsing no louder than the turning of blades in a fan makes that transition smoother. These are only 4 examples of how public brainwave entrainment can be a benefit rather than a detriment.

Yes, the above represents a very small sample of the general population. Still, binaural beat entrainment is available to everyone and the technology is inexpensive. When the public becomes aware of the advantages and incorporates brainwave entrainment for specific personal needs, then any type of Big Brother monopoly should be negated. People would be wise to know the positives of binaural beat technology and be aware of any potential sinister use, while at the same time be reaping the rewards of applying binaural beat entrainment for their own particular needs.

The book “Mind States / An Introduction to Light & Sound Technology” goes deeper into these topics, as do various articles in the AVS Journal. MP3 downloads and Mindmachines are actual delivery systems designed for experiencing binaural beat brainwave entrainment.

Now is a good time to learn more about audio beat entrainment, become aware of the potential, and to realize Big Brother would probably frown on everyone knowing about this unobtrusive aspect of mind control. Brainwave entrainment has the capacity to free minds or imprison them, therefore it is in all of our best interests to be aware of this technology and concentrate on using it in beneficial ways. Also, the more you understand about binaural beat technology the more you will recognize it being secretly implemented in unexpected public places and media by good old Big Brother.
